Have you ever thought of racing along side your favorite race car driver? Well there are games out there that allow you to do that, but nothing like what iOpener is working on. They are planning to use GPS to grab a racers position (real-time) and place them in your game so you can race with them while they race on the tv. Basically it’s taking information from real tracks that the racers are currently racing on and sends it to your computer where you race them like you are actually in the real race. Sounds cool right?
Well there are a few problems that iOpener is running into. The biggest problem is that they can’t ’see you’ and in effect can’t maneuver around you or react to your movements. iOpener has found a way around this by having the AI react to you by blocking or passing you when possible. Although this isn’t truly racing them on the track, something has to give way so you can actually race them. There has to be a hint of simulation to provide a realistic game.
This is a neat idea that I think all sim racing gamers would jump at the chance for. With being able to drive along side racers from Nascar, F1 and many others, who would give up the chance to actually say you beat Jr or Gordon?
