Recently Tecmo has been in trouble with the suit that Itagaki had put on them for not paying him correctly for the Dead or Alive game. Now they have trouble brewing from within the ranks. On June 16th, two Tecmo employees filed suit with the Tokyo District Court for unpaid wages, demanding 8.3 million yen in payment. That roughly equates to 77k USD. According to the suit, the workers claim they were placed on flexible hours and put in many hours of overtime for which they were never paid for.
These two men are representing over 300 employees who are backing them in this suit. It seems Tecmo is got a major problem on their hands now, with their best developer leaving and now a lot of the company taking them to court. For four years, the some 300 employees overtime crossed over the 100 hour mark each month, which is still unpaid.
Another part of the suit claims that Tecmo allegedly falsified/created documents that support that in fact the employees were paid. The situation that Tecmo is currently in is almost a company killer.
But one thing that keeps stabbing at me is why these employees didn’t sue 4 years earlier when they weren’t paid to begin with? Why have they waited 4 years to sue Tecmo for their unpaid overtime wages? I’m not sure, but it seems that this seems like a convenient time to go looking for money after their hyped up release of Ninja Gaiden II.
