Lately there has been some controversy over Limbo of the Lost stealing from games. Recently, they have prepared a statement which expressed that they had no idea the material was plagiarized and wouldn’t have published it if it was.
In response to the shocking notification that some alleged unauthorized copyrighted materials submitted by sources external to the development team have been found within the PC game Limbo of the Lost, we (the development team) have given our consent and full cooperation to both publishers who are recalling all units from all territories immediately.
Please be assured that we do not condone in anyway the use of unauthorized copyrighted materials and if we had been made aware earlier, we would of course have ceased development of the product and rectified the issue prior to the publication process.
But what keeps nagging at me is how couldn’t they have known? With games such as Oblivion and Diablo 2 there is no way they couldn’t have noticed. You’d have to be telling me that game developers haven’t played the two games that were responsible for redefining RPG gaming. Frankly I hope these guys go down for copying those games, but I do have to give them something. They did a pretty darn good job at it. If you look at the picture, it is almost completely identical.
Back to that quote, the developers seemed to have locked up that cage and throw away the key. Taking the blame and placing it on others isn’t smart and you know what your mother always says. When you lie, it will always come back to bite you. Well in this case, they seemed to forget that in 2004 they claimed ownership of the graphical markup of the game. Oh well, we would have found out anyway.
