Cross-dressing Teens Get Own Restroom at School
(Natthakran Tunthadilok, a 19-year-old transvestite, right, walks with his classmate Chompoo Chantrachaichot during a lunch break at Suan Dusit Institute in Bangkok, Thailand, July 30, 1999.)

A school in rural Thailand recently built a built a bathroom to accommodate the growing population of transvestite students in their school. Out of the schools some 2,600 students, over 200 of them considered themselves transvestites.

As school resumed in May, the new restroom was opened and was labeled with a half blue man and half pink woman. Under that picture, it said “Transvestite Toilet”. Although to a lot of you it may seem wrong, but the students find it relieving. A lot of them found it hard to go into the woman’s room or men’s room during school to relieve themselves.

This is something that was in dire need of being addressed in secondary schools. Finally something was done about it and these students are able to enjoy the privacy of the restroom. I believe this is a step in the right direction of accepting this lifestyle. What do you have to say about this? Should Americans, British, or any nationality accept this by opening up their own kinds of restrooms like these?

I think it’s a step in the right direction. Had such open mindedness existed in the west, many wouldn’t have been killed due to hate-crimes. Well in a country like mine.. It won’t happen in at least a thousand years

It definitely is a step in the right direction. Yes, I will admit there is a certain level of racism and sexism going on in America. There are hundred year feuds and social discrimination still going on. I’m ashamed to say that, but still, we are moving towards a brighter horizon.

This is really a mature decision taken by the authorities. I am really happy to read this article. I guess acceptance is sometimes really better than resistance. One needs to accept decisions on individuals when matters like sexuality come in.

Exactly right and that is the problem with a lot of people in todays world. They just can’t accept people for who they are.

It is really nice to see that the society is opening up and accepting differences. It is not always that people will have the same kind of life. Society needs to understand that they are human beings too and have need their freedom too. The school has taken a right decision by giving space to the ”different”. I hope the world takes it as an example to include everyone in our world.

Yeah I really agree on the fact that everyone in the society should have the freedom of expression even people with not so regular preferences. Regularity is accepted and change is flaked at.......well gud to see people are finally accepting change as normal too...

Acceptance or no acceptance, I’m not too sure, if it’d address the problem. So now what would the cross-dressers do? I mean would both the sexes have the same rest room? If so then this can’t be a solution. They are still opposite sexes and I can’t possibly believe that all transvestites would be asked to have a common restroom. What is called for is four separate bathrooms. One each for each sex and then one each for each sex of transvestite.

Good point. If they didn’t want a common room, then they can pick. But 4 restrooms would be a little over doing it yes?
